Lauri Leppik (IRF tehniskais menedžeris) sniedz oficiālo atskaiti par pasākumu (te arī pirmās bildes):
Canary islands which are a popular holiday destination for Europeans are emerging also as a new rogaining destination.
The first
Gran Canaria rogaining was held Saturday 25 February in the central mountain area of Gran Canaria island.
The total number of participants at this inaugural rogaine in the middle of Atlantic ocean was 120.
Twenty teams opted for the longer 12-hour rogaine, whereas another 26 teams chose the shorter 6 hour version.
Along local teams from Gran Canaria island there were also teams from neighboring Tenerife and Fuerteventura islands as well as from Catalonia region of mainland Spain.
Four Latvian and one Estonian team gave the event an international dimension.
The event was held around the highest peaks of the island, at heights of 1500-1900 meters.
The course required some strenuous climb, but offered also spectacular views over the whole island on a sunny day.
The vegetation varied from a very pleasant long-needle pine forest on hilltops to nearly impassable scrubby bushes on northern slopes.
Temperatures varied from minus 1 Celsius at the time of the start to plus 12-14 in the middle of the day.
For the last two hours of the 12-hour rogaine headlamps were needed.
The organisational efforts of the Club Deportico Orientagc shall be highly appreciated.
A special rogaining map was drawn for the purpose of the event at scale 1:25000 with 20 meter contures.
The overall winners of the first Gran Canaria rogaining are Valters Kaminskis-Anita Liepina from Latvia, who won bronze medal in mixed class at the latest WRC in New Zealand.
